Thanks for agreeing to be interviewed for my blog. The goal is to raise awareness about what eating disorders are and what sufferers go through.

Q: Can you please tell me a little bit about yourself, and about the eating disorder you have?

A: I have anorexia intermittently since the age of 13, triggered many times throughout my life.

Q: When did you realise you had issues with eating, and what did you do to seek help?

A: When restriction became an obsession and became a run away tool for all life's problems.

Q: Did you encounter any difficulties when seeking treatment?

A: Yes, and continue to especially as an adult and actually being treated as grown human, adult, intelligent and successful career lady. I feel ridiculed and demoralised when I look for help. It saddens me and gives me little reassurance that those young girls encountering similar problems may never get the real help they need and not be just seen as a text book case.

Q: What changes would you like to see in eating disorder services?

A: A more individual and personal approach to each patient and to involve them more in own care instead of fear mongering into just eating. To make trauma therapy an integral part of recovery.

Q: What is one thing you would like people to know about eating disorders?

A: That they are not a choice. Noone chooses to put their body and mind to such extremities for it to take over the every breathing moment. To understand while, yes, it is a mental illness per se, most sufferers are highly intelligent functioning people who deserve respect and autonomy when receiving treatment.

Q: What piece of advice would you give to someone who is struggling with an eating disorder?

A: Try to find the RIGHT help that treats you like you deserve to be treated, and please please before it gets to grip on you. Above of all admit to yourself you want to recover and know that you deserve to live a life of happiness free of these chains.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?

A: Eating disorders, while can be visible may also not be so apparent to the naked eye. We are extremely resourceful on hiding so please never judge anyone as with any disorder or human being we all have our turmoil and while some may wear on sleeve others hide but deserve to be acknowledged without judgement.
